This date marks the first-born plague on Egypt.
TÅhoku earthquake and Tsunami
This M. 9.0 quake was the most powerful earthquake to ever hit Japan, and it was one of the 5 most powerful earthquakes ever to strike the earth.
Over 15,000 people were known killed, over 3,000 became missing and another 6,000 were injured.
Over 120,000 buildings collapsed, over 250,000 were severely damaged and another nearly 700,000 sustained other damage.
The World Bank suggested the total economic damage was around $235 Billion, the worst disaster by economic impact in history. The already financially crippled economy of Japan took a massive hit, with all other nuclear plants being shut down by popular will.
The headline, though, that continued to attract attention was the damage to nuclear reactors on the eastern coast of northern Japan. The most severely damaged were at the Fukushima Diachi complex.
7 melt downs and 3 explosions sent radio active particles up into the atmosphere in massive radio active clouds. Those clouds spread radiation to Tokyo, other parts of Japan, and across the Pacific to parts of North America.

Notes
The timing of this headline is odd for several reasons.
The ratio in play is 30 modern days for each "day" in the narrative. Several of the earlier plagues happen "in the morning" which is technically 1/2 way through a modern month away from the normal pattern.
This particular March 11, 2011, lands exactly on the monthly calendar as all the other "morning" plagues.
The problem is the text says the angel came at "mid-night." This is odd. Note that the Passover meal itself must be completely consumed by "morning." This precise, but odd, timing is hard to explain.

7And they will take some of the blood and sprinkle it on the 2 doorposts and on the lintel and on the houses in which they will eat it.
8And they will eat the meat in that night, roasted with fire, with unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they will eat it.
9You will not eat any of it raw, nor cooked with water, but roasted with fire; its head with its legs, and the entrails.
10And you will leave none of it remaining until morning; and what remains of it until the morning you will burn with fire.
11And thus you will eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you will eat it in haste; for it is Yahvah's passover.
The focus is on destruction by fire, bitter herbs and quick departure. These things happend in the area around the reactors, with the nuclear fire of these plants as the fire, cesium, plutonium, tritium and radioactive iodine as the bitter herbs and the need to quickly escape contamination as the motive to flee.
The text also says mentions "morning." The timing of the quake in Japan was at 14:46 local time, 5:46 AM GMT. Note this is just after sunrise in Jerusalem, the "morning" given in this passage.
